I still think this is one the most under appreciated songs from the past 5 years. This is a great tune...and SLS4 may very well be the best of the bunch.

Great,Great song! What the hell is that song about? Is the person telling this woman from beyond? What is his dark secret? Why is he asking her if she wants to die?

It's funny, but I was just listening to this song the other day and wondering why I can't name another song from the Toadies but I absolutely love Possum Kingdom. It's a gem of a tune, that's for sure. What's it about? I think it might be about a dude who murders a chick. Dark shit, that's for sure. Here are the lyrics to Possum Kingdom from the Toadies.

Make up your mind
Decide to walk with me
Around the lake tonight
Around the lake tonight
By my side
By my side
I'm not gonna lie
I'll not be a gentleman
Behind the boathouse
I'll show you my dark secret

I'm not gonna lie
I want you for mine
My blushing bride
My lover, be my lover, yeah...

Don't be afraid
I didn't mean to scare you
So help me, Jesus

I can promise you
You'll stay as beautiful
With dark hair
And soft skin...forever
Forever

Make up your mind
Make up your mind
And I'll promise you
I will treat you well
My sweet angel
So help me, Jesus

(hey, hey, hey)

Give it up to me
Give it up to me
Do you wanna be
My angel?
So help me!

Be my angel
Be my angel
Do you wanna die?
I promise you
I will treat you well
My sweet angel
So help me, Jesus

Jesus
Jesus
Jesus...

I'm from Texas originally and I have cruised around Lake Possum Kingdom before water skiing. The Toadies are from Fort Worth, Texas and Lake PK is very close to there. Here's what I think:

I believe the song is about a Vampire who wants to turn his girlfriend/lover into one as well. I think Lake Possum Kingdom is simply the setting. I have the album and we've all seen enough movies or television shows to understand the myths behind the making of a vampire. I'm definately not into the Vampire thing, it's just the only thing that can make sense. When I bought the album and saw the song on there, I was thinking - "The only Possum Kingdom anything I know is the lake that I've been to near Dallas". I believe the song is intersting and has good music, but Possum Kingdom is the setting of the vampire ritual between himself and a human subject that he wants to spend a little more time with - about an eternity.

I caught a Toadies interview when they performed at Livestock in Tampa. They said that vampire meaning is 100% WRONG. In their own explanation, it is about an older camp counselor luring a young female camper down to the lake for what he believes will be a little vis a vis "bonding", but things go wrong.

I live in Texas, and I've always heard it was about a murder at Lake Possum Kingdom near Dallas.

The vampire theory is what always made the most sense to me. For all of those people who say it's from a killing at Possum Lake, give a link to a news article or a link to an interview with the Toadies where they denounce the vampire explination instead of "They said it's wrong, trust me guy"

its got to be about vampires, look at the lyrics, with dark hair and soft skin-forever. seriously, what else has dark hair and soft skin forever other than a vampire?

Ive always heard the song was about the Possum Kingdom murders that happened in Texas about 20 years ago or so. Basically a whole bunch of girls were murdered and found with their throats cut, completely drained of their blood. As the story goes, one girl managed to get away, but no one was ever caught. My friends mom had some newspaper clippings. But yeah anyways, pretty strange when you think about it.

From a 1995 interview:

Umbarger: 'Possum Kingdom' is a ghost story."

Lewis: "Possum Kingdom is a lake. One of the ten best fishin' spots in the U.S."

Umbarger: "It's not about vampires, even though we have a big underground vampire following in Florida."

Lewis: "It's just a story I heard long ago;
it's just a really cool, eerie lake, and some stuff I heard and some stuff I
just make up. I tend to do that."

http://www.musicfanclubs.org/toadies/toadies/ripart.txt

Verdict: It's not about vampires. It's probably a general combination of the rumours that he heard about the lake with his own take on it added in.

When I first heard the song I thought "serial killer", although after the fact the vampire thing made sense too.

The song is not about vampires Twisted Evil as evidenced by the Toadies own admission. I believe the song is about necrophilia Shocked and preserving the corpse of the dead woman to be able to continue to engage in this horrific act to fulfill his sick sexual desires...hence the lyrics:

"I can promise you
You'll stay as beautiful
With dark hair
And soft skin...forever
Forever"

Think about it Wink

i know that it is about vampires, because i am the girl that he turned. he is just saying it is not about vampires to cover it up. dont ever go to that lake, if you do i will be there waiting for you and i might just drink you or i might turn you as well and give you soft skin forever. and, yes, we do have soft skin but sometimes we have to use lotion.

I really think that anyone who thinks it is about vampires is ridiculous. I mean come on. Vampires. Whatever. I think that it is about little girls eating ice cream. Don't you all see. Wheew.
