I think part of the SLS Committee is anti-Hip. How else can you explain the fact this is the only Hip song on any of the SLS discs? The Tragically Hip are an amazing band I'm proud to have seen six times since New Year's '99. Hip! Hip! Hip! Hip! Hip! Hip! Hip! Hip! Hip! Hip! Hip! Hip! Hip! Hip! Hip! Hip! Hip! Hip! Hip! Hip! Hip! Hip! Hip! Hip!

The answer to your question is that only one song was worthy - and if the truth be told, even this one was a compromise...

Not the best example of the Hip available. As they mature, their energy fades somewhat and Gord's existential lyrics work their way to the top, leaving newer listeners scratching their heads asking – “what the hell was that?” For a true sense of what you’ve missed, try listening to “Up To Here” (yes…the whole CD!)

Up To Here is my favourite Hip CD, but I'm also a big fan of their latest In Violet Light. I disagree with you Marty on your statement "as they mature, their energy fades somewhat". I think there's a shitload of energy on Are You Ready?, Silver Jet and A Beautiful Thing. Sure, wth maturity has come a more introspective, less heavy sound, but I wouldn't say they've lost their energy.

By the way, another great bluesy rocker from the Hip is Road Apples. And if you're looking for a hit-laden disc with mass appeal, you've got to spin Fully Completely.

I liked phantom power a lot, and I think that Gord just gets better with time. I know a lot of people who really hate the hip and they can't even explain why... hmmm. I love 'em.

One must keep in mind that the "Hip" produce multi-dimentional songs that may take a couple of listenings to absorb. However, once you've crawled inside the atmosphere that they have created, you will certainly understand why they receive the phenominal reviews and praise as they do. If you would give the newer albums some time to digest, you would find them equally as brilliant as their older work.
In many years from now, you may notice as well as I have that you have a big pile of sh%t CD's in the corner, wondering why you ever bought them as you are listening to "Fully Completely" which sets on top your sterio, never having been put away as it still brings the listening enjoyment it did 10 years ago. The tragicaly hip are the worst excuse for a band. It 's infuriating that a band of so little talent get played on canadian radio, and that MY TAX dolloars support that SHITY band.

FACT1 they are nobodies outside of canada, cuz they are shit
FACT2 gordon downie is a retarded off key mongoloid
FACt3 Those retards are an embarsassmetn to canada
fACT4 If a musicain is good, it should be played on it's own merits , and not shoved down our throats.
fACT5 I"m pissed that we are lead to feel un canadian if we don't like the hip...
Well I hate the HIP, and the CFL. But love canada.. so piss off to that argument
fACT6 I went on a hip webpage, there was a poll for best canadian band ever, it wouldn't let u vote for anyboyd but the hip...go figure

and to all of you that like the hip...

Talk a long walk off a short pier...after u get off teh BUS!! ya lozers!!

I am adding to the response a friend 'Honest man' about the Hip. Why this lousy band is played is because of 35 % Canadian content on FM radio. This is basically allowing shitty music to be pushed by radio when they need to fulfill their quota for Canadian content. You may notice that when you go to the US, the Hip are never played. As well, even in stores in Grand Forks, North Dakota which is only 2 hours south of Winnipeg,MB. they have no Hip available in their CD racks. The reason for their lack of recognition outside of Canada is simple, THEY SUCK !!!!!

Pffft!!

Turn on the radio up in New York buddy, the Hip is ALWAYS on the radio. Mabye it's not played in North Dakota because the farmers are too busy listening to Country and screwing sheep? Shocked

What all people have to remember is that music is an art form. Just because certain people do not appreciate an artist does not mean they suck. The fact that The Hip are Canadian and get plenty of air time on Canadian radio cannot account for their success. Millions of people have bought their CD's and gone to their concerts. Therefore they do not suck

I had tickets to see THE WHO tonight in Long Beach CA, guess who opened? Yup, The Tragically Hip. When i arrived at the venue, I asked everyone in sight who was opening and not a single person knew. Being a music fan, not particular to anything (excluding country which sucks), I sat through the whole set. Thinking not every song is great maybe it will get better. Song after song it seemed to increasingly get worse. By the end of their set about 4 people applauded, and the guy next to me returned the shirt he bought which he thought was a WHO shirt. I have nothing against Canada (RUSH is the shit), I have family about 2 hours north of Detroit. I have to say if you like this group you may need to see a doctor and have your head removed from your ass, and the crap pulled out of your ears. Not all was bad the group can play music, the singer couldn't hold a note in a bucket. What a fucking waste of time. I would rather have seen the crew just set up the stage for the event and let The Who play with no opener. On the bright side no matter how bad The Who could have screwed up, it would have sounded like heaven compared to the tone deaf fuck lead singer from hip. The only thing tragic is, your not thinking clear enough to see they eat balls.
