C'mon with comments! I think Avril is not That good as some people say, she knows to play a few chords and that's it. But my top question is How good do you have to play guitar to call yourself "a good player"?

either avril really sucks or she just purposely plays sucky music. i think to be a good guitarist you should be able to do solos. kind of like the stuff they do in thrash/speed metal. anyone can play power cords.

old metallica stuff has some great solos in it. jimi hendrix has some amazing guitar parts too. this video clip shows a great guitar player.

A good guitar player means to know more than 3 chords and classic rythm, I think. Everyone could or can play that. About avril: she is not a good guitar player, she fakes too much, only thing that I see in her act is hand up, hand down, hand up, hand down, change chord, hand up, hand down... I realy think that she should work on her stage-look. Cause she can't sing well if she is not standing still. Faker....

I reckon a good guitar player should have musicality. I don't think it matters so much what you know - even though thats also important - but how you play the song. If I see emotion and someone's own individual style put into even a simple song, that signifies a good guitarist to me. Someone who understands what they are playing and the fact that the music should create some sort of emotional response in the listener........

She never said she was good at playing guitar...it sounds like you guys definition of guitar playing is one where the person is really good off the bat...at least she writes her own music and is putting some effort in trying to learn how to play the guitar. You have to give her some credit for improving her guitar playing or you are just a person who very narrow minded.

Yes, I agree with Lori. Feelings are something you realy need to play well. I wouldn't give any credit to Avril, cause she doesen't write most of her songs and if she is only learning to play guitar yet, she shouldn't be such a poser with a guitar that she is not using.

i think everone has to start some where and im just learning to play the guitar.I dont know who this avril is but as long as shes happy doing what she's doing thats all what matters. i wish i could play like george strait but i dont think i'l be that good but i dont put other people down. and if you lot think you can play better do it! and lets see what you sound like.nothing is easy at first and we all have to learn.

Here's the answer to the question. I may be wrong, this is my own opinion. Im a guitarist and I like to tell myself im pretty good regardless of whether its the truth or not. To be a good guitar player well on the technical side you have to be able to play all the chords. Know all the chords.(this is possible by a system i wont tell about). Be able to alternate pick. Be able to sweep pick a little. tap on the fret board. Use special effect without sounding like a woman in labor. Bend strings accurately. Hammer on and pull off well. the list goes on.

On the heart part, you sould feel the music and feel like the guitar is talking or better yet singing. I saw the man in the video. He was good. But i bet he couldnt sweep arpeggios too great. But nevertheless the guy was pretty damn good. There is one golden rule for guitarists though. A rule that defeats the purpose of all of the above writing. Never, EVER, compare yourself to other guitarists. Its not a sport. Its not about competition. Its NEVER about being the best. Its about speaking to your audience with the music and expressing yourself and having a good time. Thats what its about and what its always been about. Don't blind yourselves.

As for Avril: She can play but she doesn't need to put in super fast arpeggios and licks and riffs into the music. Maybe she isnt able to. The point is that she is doing what she can and speaking to the audience with it. It's music, not a circus act. Jimi Hendrix did the same(although the two are different in tons of ways)and people loved it. If your heart and souls there you already made it. Never be a robot

I do disagree with your first part...i don't think you really need to know all the scholastic parts of guitar playing to be considered 'good'.
As you pointed out brillantly in the rest of your post...it's what you bring out of guitar that makes you 'good'. If you can show your heart and passion in what you play (be it blues, rock, thrash, flamenco, whatever), then in my opinion, you can consider yourself 'good'. :O)

You might even sound like crap to some, but if you have the music in your heart, then that is all that matters.

Thanks for posting the 'Golden Rule' too. Too many people frustrate themselves because they can't compare to the 'greats'. Music is too subjective to be that cut and dry.

I agree with you in that...if you love to play, and can play what you love...then I think the music is it's own reward.
